Online Teaching

Rationale

I want to be available to my caregivers in a variety of ways, however to initially communicate with them, I will send home a physical copy of my welcome letter in multiple languages and provide my email and phone number to families in case they need it. I will also send home a physical questionnaire to better get to know the families in my classroom and their student(s). I also want to send home a physical copy of a newsletter each week with a highlight of that caregiver’s specific child for the week. In other words, I would send home a new newsletter that is made every week, and every family would get an additional comment about their child in my class. For example, Family A would receive the same newsletter that every other family did, however it would also include something about Family A’s student that I thought was noteworthy. This could include an advancement in reading or another subject, or even just a kind action that that student completed during the week. I will also email another copy home to the caregiver’s email just in case the student does not give the papers to them. I will communicate this way with caregivers because caregivers want/should have copies of everything from the classroom. So, instead of having them print it out at home, I just send a copy home with the students. I also email a digital copy for those caregivers who prefer that method or if something happens to the physical copy. This all connects to my overall philosophy because it fosters a comfortable environment with no secrets and no shame in asking questions. All communication is open, and everyone is able and expected to communicate. I want to be very transparent and available to the families in my classroom and allow room for their feedback and input. This open communication builds relationships and trust between myself and the families of my students. According to studies done by Haim Ginott, teachers can and should create and provide a safe environment for learning where other students are not shamed or judged. This is exactly how I want to create my classroom as well, with open and non-intimidating communication.
